Empathy in Architecture
– emotion and embodied simulation in design

Third seminar of the centenary series of seminars
21 April 2015, venue: SES Auditorium Kino K-13, Helsinki
Organisers: the TWRB foundation, the Asko Foundation and the Alvar Aalto Academy

Specialized neurons, called mirror neurons, were discovered two decades ago by Italian scholars at the University of Parma. These neurons enable us to unconsciously simulate the behaviour and mood of others, and even the physical phenomena around us. The discovery is opening up exciting views into human behaviour and mental life towards the understanding of emotion, feeling and empathy in architecture, design, and art.
The lecturers in the Seminar are: Dr Sarah Robinson (Pavia), Dr Prof. Harry F Mallgrave (Chicago), Dr Prof. Vittorio Gallese (Parma, co-discoverer of the mirror neurons), and Prof. Juhani Pallasmaa (Helsinki, introduction to the subject).

November 2015

Produced by the TWRB foundation, the ideas competition seeks new, innovative solutions for presenting and researching the collection maintained by the foundation. After the competition, the winners will be invited to attend a seminar to further develop their ideas. The theme was prepared in two expert seminars held in 2014. The competition will be launched during Helsinki Design Week, and its results will be published at the end of the centenary year, in October 2016.
